Will Apple's New AI Be Your Best Friend or Just Another Tech Fad?

When I heard about Apple’s new intelligence, I thought, “Will everyone be suddenly wooed by the magical abilities of Apple with enhanced AI? Will this connect us or further disconnect us?”

I truly believe that AI can enhance our abilities and solve so many of the world’s problems. I also know personally how much I feel the regular need to disconnect from my phone to reconnect to myself and others. I have seen how hard it is for my adult children to be without their phones. What will this mean for your day to day life and the future?

At the recent WWDC 2024 (an annual event hosted by Apple Inc. where developers from around the world gather to learn about the latest software and technologies for mac and includes keynote presentations, technical sessions, hands-on labs, and networking), Apple took a significant leap forward by unveiling Apple Intelligence, an innovative personal intelligence system integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

This groundbreaking system marries generative AI with personal context to enhance user experiences in unprecedented ways, including improved writing tools, smarter email management, and more personalized interactions through Siri. Apple’s emphasis on privacy, with on-device processing and dedicated servers for larger tasks, underscores its commitment to user security and trust. Yes, “personal context”. Think more human-like in how your phone communicates with you. Whoa! I am not sure if I am excited or scared.

A New Frontier in Personalized Technology

Apple Intelligence represents a paradigm shift in how we interact with technology. By integrating generative AI with personal context, Apple has crafted a system that doesn't just respond to commands but anticipates needs and preferences. Something I wish my family could do. This tech is designed to be an extension of the user, providing seamless, intuitive support in daily tasks.

One of the highlight features of Apple Intelligence is its enhanced writing tools. These tools leverage generative AI to assist users in crafting emails, documents, and messages that are not only grammatically correct but also stylistically aligned with the user’s personal tone. Imagine sending an email to your boss that sounds like you, but on a good day—with proper punctuation and fewer typos. Say goodbye to grammarly.

Additionally, Apple Intelligence’s smarter email management system uses AI to prioritize and organize emails based on their content and the user's past interactions. Picture this: no more missed invitations to important meetings buried under the daily barrage of "urgent" sales promotions. Doing my sorting for me? hmmm.

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, receives a significant upgrade with Apple Intelligence. Tailoring interactions based on individual user contexts apparently helps mitigate the risk of bias and ensures more equitable and inclusive user experiences.  Personally, I am biased that there are so many biases in AI therefore I want to experience it in action.

Moreover, transparency and accountability are integral to the design of Apple Intelligence. Apple provides clear information on how AI decisions are made and offers users control over their data and interactions with the system. This transparency can foster trust and allow users to understand and manage the AI’s impact on their daily lives. So, when Siri suggests a gluten-free recipe, you can be sure it’s based on your dietary preferences, not a glitch in the matrix.

This innovative system exemplifies the potential of AI to enhance human capabilities.  The question becomes does it really create a more connected, productive, and ethical digital future?  Personally, I won’t be using it (at least for some time) since I haven’t upgraded my phone, don’t intend to soon and most importantly, I will pre-decide how I will be influenced.  It is a wait and see for me… especially since some of the features are not fully released.
